SENATOR WRIGHT AIDS LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES

State funds secured for several municipal needs in Oswego County

Senator Jim Wright (R, C, I - Watertown) announced today that he has secured $200,000 that will allow several Oswego County municipalities to complete much-needed projects without placing an additional burden on local property taxpayers.

“These state investments are part of an ongoing effort to assist local governments and taxpayers,” Senator Wright said. “Each of these projects are necessary and I am pleased that I was able to help these municipalities complete these projects.”

            The projects are:

            * $50,000 to help the Town of Hastings repair the Fuller Road Bridge, which recently partially collapsed. The funds will allow the town to repair a culvert and guardrail, as well as repave the bridge.

“This emergency has put a tremendous strain on the Town of Hastings Highway Department,” said Hastings Highway Supervisor Robert Clark. “The Town of Hastings will now be able to respond to this incident while meeting the year’s road paving needs.”

“Because this was an unforseen incident, no funds were budgeted for this crisis,” said Oswego County Legislator Fred Beardsley (R - Central Square). “Once again, Senator Wright has shown his commitment to local municipalities and local taxpayers by delivering this crucial funding. I was pleased to work with the Senator to assist the Town of Hastings.”

            * $25,000 to pay for engineering and design of a new sewage treatment plant in the village of Parish. The village is attempting to upgrade and improve its sewer system.

“The village of Parish greatly appreciates Senator Wright’s assistance with this study, which will pinpoint what the village has to do in order to improve its sewer system,” said village Mayor Leon Heagle.

            * $10,000 for the Town of Granby to install an integrated highway department fuel management system to make the Granby highway department more efficient by keeping an accurate account of fuel consumption that will ensure fuel is not being wasted.

“The Town of Granby Highway Department wants to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars and one way to do that is to provide an accurate accounting of our fuel consumption. With this assistance, we will be able to accomplish that goal,” said Lynn Moyer, Granby Highway Superintendent.

            * $25,000 for engineering costs associated with extending the Village of Pulaski’s sewer lines. The village is extending its line on Hinman Road to accommodate new residential construction planned for the area.

“For this kind of residential expansion to happen, we need shovel-ready sites. This project will expand the village’s tax base, which has a direct benefit to all of Pulaski’s taxpayers,” Pulaski Village Mayor Edward Delaney said.

            * $50,000 for a new highway department fuel island in the Town of Scriba, which is used by the town highway department and the town volunteer fire department. The state DEC informed the Town that it could no longer use its fuel island and that it had to be replaced.

“The use of a dedicated fuel island is essential to operating an efficient Highway Department,” said Brad Coe, Scriba Highway Superintendent. “With this funding, the Highway Department will be able to continue to provide its essential services to the people of the Town of Scriba and to the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department.”

“Constructing this fuel island with only local funds would have placed a major strain on the Town of Scriba’s budget and, consequently, local taxpayers. With this funding, an important project for the Town of Scriba will become a reality,” said Oswego County Legislator Kevin Gardner (R - Mexico).

“This project will make the Town of Scriba’s Highway Department much more efficient and will result in a much better and more timely delivery of services to town residents,” said Town Supervisor Kenneth Burdick.

            * $30,000 to construct a new gazebo at Goettel Park in the village of Central Square.

“This gazebo will serve as an attraction to draw more people to the village. With this funding, the village will have a gathering place for weddings, small concerts and community events,” said Village Mayor Michael Dixon.

            * $5,000 to upgrade recreation fields in the village of Hannibal. The funds will be used to conduct an engineering and designs to correct drainage problems that result in the fields being under-utilized.

“The village has a wonderful park but, because of drainage issues, kids can’t play there much of the time. This engineering study is the first step in providing a safe and fun place for children in the village to go,” said Village Mayor Lowell Newvine.

            * $5,000 to install a traffic light in front of the New Haven Elementary School. The school is on Route 104 and speeding traffic is a concern for parents as they drop off and pick up their children from school.

“This light was needed to calm traffic in the area, especially during school hours,” said Legislator Gardner, who brought the issue to Senator Wright’s attention. “I am pleased that this project will happen to prevent a potential tragedy.”

Senator Wright said he will continue to work hard to deliver results for local municipalities.
