SENATOR WRIGHT SECURES FUNDING FOR HASTINGS LIGHTHOUSE PARK

Senator Jim Wright (R,C,I, Watertown) announced today at the Hastings Town Hall that he has secured $75,000 for the Town of Hastings Lighthouse Park project. The funding will be used to create access to the park from the Oneida River, which is the first phase of the project.

The Town of Hastings purchased the land around the Oneida River lighthouse ten years ago with the plan to build a park. The lighthouse has remained fully operational, guiding boats up the Oneida River after dark, but the land around the structure has fallen to disrepair. At the end of Phase 2 of Hastings’ Lighthouse Park project, the area will be landscaped, and there will be access to the park from the water and County Route 37, wireless Internet, and a pavilion for community events and picnicking.

“I am pleased to assist the Town of Hastings in getting the Lighthouse Park project off the ground,” said Senator Jim Wright. “Once completed, this park will have economic benefits for the area. The park will serve as a destination for boaters, attracting them to stop in Brewerton and enjoy the park as well as the community’s excellent restaurants and shopping.”

“This funding gets us through the entire first phase of the Lighthouse Park project and covers the matching funds portion of the $170,000 grant we’ve applied for through the New York State Canal Corporation for the second phase,” said County Legislator Fred Beardsley.“We’re grateful to Senator Wright for securing this funding. This puts us in a favorable position for the Canal Corp. funding.”

“This project, which the town began about 8 years, is the catalyst for further economic development in the Town of Hastings. But we lacked the funding to get the park project moving,” said Hastings Town Supervisor Bruce Rio. “The cooperation of local and state goverrnments and the Canal Corp. has allowed us to bring this project to fruition.”

The total cost of the two phases of the project is $240,000.
