SENATOR WRIGHT PLEASED NEW TROOPS
ARE COMING TO FORT DRUM

Senator also Applauds Congressman McHugh’s
and Governor Spitzer’s Efforts

Senator Jim Wright expressed his pleasure today that an additional 1479 troops will be located at Fort Drum. The US Army announced earlier today that 900 troops would be added to the base in the near future, with another 579 coming by 2013.

“These additional troops will certainly add to the economic growth of Jefferson County and the region,” said Senator Wright. “With upgraded infrastructure and additional housing, the area is now more prepared than ever to absorb a further expansion of Fort Drum. I applaud Congressman McHugh for his tireless efforts in lobbying the US Army for the location of additional troops here, and I thank him for his commitment to the base and the surrounding communities.”

In the last three years, Fort Drum has expanded by 55 percent, with 6000 new soldiers coming into the area. As a result, new businesses have sprung up throughout Jefferson County, along with hundreds of new homes and multi-family units.

In May, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced state assistance intended to address several of the biggest issues facing the region: the availability of affordable housing and access to mental and social services.

“Without the commitment of Governor Spitzer and the state of New York providing the necessary assurances with regard to housing, education and health care, this announcement would not be a reality. This commitment continues the strong state role that was established by Governors Cuomo and Pataki, which has been critical to the local communities’ efforts to support and grow Fort Drum,” added Senator Wright.  “I am very pleased to have been a participant in making sure the necessary state commitments were, and continue to be, available. It’s ironic that I began my career in the North County as Jefferson County Administrator with the initial Fort Drum expansion, and now conclude my career with the announcement of the third major expansion.”

Senator Wright went on to say, “This is a testimony to the people of the North Country who make the men and women at Fort Drum feel at home, accept them as neighbors, and everyday respect the sacrifices the military makes, and the dedication they have, on behalf of this nation and its communities. We could not be more proud of Fort Drum and its people, and we are pleased that the Army recognizes the strength of that commitment and relationship.”
